The Highlight Of The Month: Doris Starling
This month, we celebrate the incredible contributions of Doris Starling, our new Housing Coordinator at NIA Project Safe Spaces Youth. With over 34 years of experience, Doris has dedicated her life to supporting marginalized communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ population and those experiencing homelessness.
Doris’s remarkable journey in social services began decades ago and has seen her establish several grassroots organizations, including the LGBTQ center in Hollywood and women’s transitional living centers like The House of Faith and House of the Redeemed. Her work has always focused on providing critical resources such as housing, training, and personal care, helping countless individuals transition from challenging circumstances to new beginnings.
In 2017, after a brief retirement, Doris was called upon to use her expertise again. She was tasked with transforming an abandoned bus station into a functional shelter for the Midnight Mission in Santa Ana. Her determination and vision turned that space into a safe haven for many, underscoring her unwavering commitment to community service.
Doris’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2017, she was honored as one of the “100 Most Influential Game Changers in Orange County” by the Orange County, a well-deserved recognition of her tireless work in the field.
As she steps into her new role at NIA Project Safe Spaces Youth, we are excited to see the positive impact she will undoubtedly make. Doris’s wealth of experience, deep compassion, and innovative spirit make her an invaluable addition to our team. We are proud to highlight her this month and look forward to the transformative work she will continue to do for our organization and the communities we serve.
Thank you, Doris, for your unwavering dedication and for being an inspiration to us all.
